New Committee for the International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research - Baden Württemberg (IAHR-BW)

In a meeting with many of the IAHR-BW members, yesterday evening was chosen the next committee that will lead and develop the activities during 2012. Through a tight vote, the candidates for Vice-president, Finance and Web Master were chosen. I am glad to be elected as Vice-President of IAHR-BW in order to promote activities and opportunities among the students involved in the organization. It was a joint win, thus, for this year there are two Vice-Presidents, my colleague Mehdi Ak was also chosen. Soon, there will be posted a note and a picture with the whole new committee and also, the activities and services for this new year. Congratulations to all my partners!!!
What is the IAHR?
(Text copied from the IAHR website: http://www.iahr-bw.org)

IAHR, the International Association of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research, particularly promotes the advancement and exchange of knowledge through working groups, specialty symposia, congresses, and publications on water resources, river and coastal hydraulics, risk analysis, energy, environment, disaster prevention, industrial processes. Among the variety of activities which are undertaken to achieve our mission are:

  • Organizing events: congresses, specialty conferences, workshops and continuing education courses
  • Technical meetings through our Sections
  • Regional meetings through our Regional Divisions
  • European Engineering Graduate School Environment Water: IAHR-EGW, Stuttgart
  • Participation in international programs such as UNESCO, WMO and ICSU
  • Promotion of student activities
  • Publications

The objectives of applied research, scientific exchange, and technology transfer and research management provide an umbrella for all IAHR endeavors. The scope of IAHR involves research, engineering applications and their interactions and thus caters to the needs of both individual and corporate members. Hydraulics covers only one part of the water resources domain and most applications, developments, policies, and engineering works must consider all aspects of that domain. IAHR provides an excellent basis for co-operation with other water-related associations, where common interests call for combined efforts in hydrology (IAHS), urban water (IWA), development of water resources (IWRA), coastal and maritime engineering, etc. Specific developments which take place within the IAHR disciplinary field but have thematically larger implications and application areas (e.g., hydroinformatics) are stimulated by IAHR. Professionals from different disciplines will find a place in IAHR, and interactions with neighboring disciplines possibly covered by other associations are stimulated and can find proper attention.

About IAHR-BW
In response to the promotion of the student activities of IAHR (International Association of Hydro-Environmental Engineering and Research), the very first student chapter was founded at the University Stuttgart in the year 2000. At that time it was named IAHR-SSC (Stuttgart Student Chapter). Since then, it has always been one of the most active chapters in the world.
In 2005, under the presidency of Rüdiger Siebel, the IAHR-SSC has been registered at the Stuttgart State Court as a public organization, and was officially named as IAHR-SSC. The IAHR BW (officially still named as IAHR-SSC) has its roots within two international, water related, study programs at the Universität Stuttgart: the ENWAT (International Doctoral Program Environment Water) and the WAREM (Internationally Orientated Master of Science Program Water Resources Engineering and Management) program. The IAHR BW is dedicated to promote students activities and to facilitate their communication with young water professionals worldwide and internationally renowned researchers.

From 2009 onwards, after renaming the IAHR from "Hydraulic" to "Hydro-Environment", the IAHR BW is increasingly expanding and including students from other programs within the Universität Stuttgart (e.g. Umweltschutztechnik, WASTE) and is intending to link related study programs from other universities within Baden-Württemberg.

Further, the IAHR BW is including former members and friends who have now proceeded in their professional career, thus creating a powerful academic network, simplifying the step from university into profession for our members.

I. Change the Biz World Winners

Challenge:Future In partnership with World Business School Council for Sustainable Business (WBSCSB) challenged youth to change the business world!
From June 7th 2011, youth members of the global think tank and competition Challenge:Future were challenge to present ideas on how to bring sustainability to the business sector. Here was the task:

"Imagine that you are applying for your dream job. After many tests and interviews you are given your final assignment – the most important test of your abilities and skills to survive in 21st century. You are asked to develop a presentation to the company’s senior management offering your own best thinking and capabilities on:

- What is sustainability in your own words?

- Why does it matter for business?

- How should future managers – youth of today – be prepared to successfully deal with emerging challenges of the world (environmental and societal issues)?

- In your view, what are three the most important characteristics of a truly sustainable company that should be never, ever neglected and why? Do you know any such company?

- How would you lead the transformation of company, department, process, product to tr

uly sustainable one? Where would you start, what would you do first?"

And here is my solution: http://challengefuture.org/stormit/ideas/197

I ended as semifinalist in a group of 15 participants. Then, we were rechallenge to present our ideas to the business sector. I had to set appointments and finally, got the chance with Daimler and MFG in Stuttgart. Judges chose and my proposal was chosen as the finalist and winner of the competition. The prize is: 1st place – full participation at the challengefuture Summit 2012 (travel, accommodation and program).

Here is the post: http://www.challengefuture.org/news/490

I am very happy for this opportunity of learning and gaining skills within this competition, and also, having networks among the business sector.
